Weight-loss drug ad crackdown: 88 regulator actions in 2026
Weight-loss drug marketing is drawing steady regulator action on both sides of the Atlantic. Between 1 January and 22 October 2026, the US Food and Drug Administration and the UK Advertising Standards Authority took 88 formal actions against the marketing or online sale of GLP-1 and other prescription weight-loss medicines. We compiled every one from the regulators’ own records.
Key finding: 69 FDA warning letters and 19 upheld ASA rulings. 55 of the FDA letters went to telehealth companies over how they marketed compounded GLP-1 drugs, in two batches dated 20 February (30 letters) and 8 June (25 letters).
The 2026 tracker at a glance
| Regulator | Action | Count (1 Jan – 22 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| FDA (US) | Warning letters to telehealth firms over compounded GLP-1 marketing | 55 |
| FDA (US) | Other warning letters over online sale or marketing of semaglutide, tirzepatide or GLP-1 products (peptide sellers, online pharmacies, GLP-1-branded products) | 14 |
| ASA (UK) | Upheld rulings on ads for prescription weight-loss medicines | 19 |
| Total | 88 | |
What the FDA objected to
The 55 telehealth letters share a pattern: websites implying a compounded drug is the same as Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro or Zepbound, or branding that suggested the telehealth firm made the drug itself. The FDA labels all 55 as false or misleading claims. The other 14 letters went to sellers offering semaglutide, tirzepatide or related peptides online, and to firms marketing GLP-1-branded products.
What the ASA objected to
In the UK, prescription-only medicines may not be advertised to the public at all, so most rulings turned on whether an ad promoted a weight-loss medicine. The 19 upheld rulings include:
- Influencer and affiliate posts. On 11 February the ASA upheld four rulings against Mounjaro posts with discount codes on Instagram and TikTok (Zava, MedExpress, Voy and UK Meds Direct).
- The oral pill launch. On 7 October it upheld five more, including two pharmacies that took waitlists or pre-orders for an oral weight-loss pill around its UK launch.
- Body image and fake reviews. Rulings against ads exploiting new mothers’ body image (Juniper, April) and a “UK Weight Loss Reviews” page run by a pharmacy (Bolt, July).
Separately, the ASA’s April enforcement report found about 900 weight-loss medicine ads from 38 advertisers likely to break the rules, out of more than 95,000 captured.
Black Friday: the rules for weight-loss deals
Two of the 19 ASA rulings this year were about Black Friday offers on weight-loss medicines: Juniper’s time-limited deals (April) and Voy’s Black Friday emails (May). The ASA found that pushing urgency and discounts on prescription weight-loss medicines was irresponsible as well as promoting the medicines to the public. With Black Friday on 27 November, any brand planning weight-loss offers in the UK should expect the same scrutiny. In the US, the FDA’s letters focus on claims that a compounded drug is the same as a branded one.

What this means for health brands’ PR
Coverage of weight-loss treatments now sits next to enforcement news. Journalists covering a launch or a price cut will check whether the claims match what regulators allow. Our healthcare PR work starts with the claims review, and our guide to health claims in PR covers the rules in more detail.
Method
- FDA: all 474 warning letters dated 1 Jan – 22 Oct 2026 in the FDA warning-letter database, classified from the letter text. Letters about manufacturing or sterility at compounders and distributors, not marketing or online sale, are excluded (7 letters). Dates are the dates on the letters; FDA often posts letters weeks later.
- ASA: all formal rulings published 1 Jan – 22 Oct 2026 on asa.org.uk, filtered by topic and checked by hand. Informally resolved cases are excluded because the ASA does not publish their details.
- FTC: we found no FTC action on weight-loss drug marketing in 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Can you advertise weight-loss injections in the UK?
Not to the public. Prescription-only medicines, including GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, cannot be advertised to consumers in the UK. Clinics can describe their services, but the ASA has upheld rulings where an ad, post or discount code effectively promoted the medicine.
Why did the FDA send warning letters to telehealth companies?
The letters said the firms’ websites made false or misleading claims about compounded GLP-1 drugs, such as implying they are the same as approved brands or that the telehealth firm made them.
How many weight-loss drug ads have been banned in 2026?
The ASA upheld 19 formal rulings on prescription weight-loss medicine ads from 1 January to 22 October 2026.
