Digital PR case study · Physiotherapy & rehab

From zero branded search to national authority

Reactive PR, run at volume with a real practitioner behind every answer, took a physio and rehab retailer from no press presence into national health and fitness titles, and changed what its website had to do.

The results

The coverage

Sixteen pieces of linked coverage and nine brand mentions: twenty-five placements in total, across national news, men’s and women’s lifestyle and health titles. Of the sixteen linked, thirteen are verified in Ahrefs at DR 74–91, with 21 dofollow links across nine domains. The engagement began in 2021, and each row links to the original article.

Not every valuable placement carries a link. An unlinked brand mention, where a journalist names the expert or the business without a hyperlink, still builds recognition, and it increasingly feeds the AI answer engines that cite sources by name rather than by link. We track mentions alongside linked coverage because both move the same needle.

DR = Ahrefs Domain Rating (0–100). “Dofollow” and “Nofollow” describe verified backlinks; “Mention” is an unlinked citation. A dash means the placement was not in the supplied Ahrefs export.

The client

A physiotherapy and rehabilitation equipment retailer with practitioner expertise in-house and, at the start of the engagement, effectively no presence in the mainstream health and fitness press its buyers read. Branded search volume was zero, nobody was looking for them by name.

The challenge

Turn clinical knowledge about movement, recovery and injury into commentary national health desks would actually run, without paid placement, so the coverage carried real editorial weight and the links were genuinely earned.

The strategy

This programme ran almost entirely on reactive PR: monitoring journalist requests daily and answering them fast, accurately and in the practitioner's own voice. Where the haircare programme balanced active and reactive pitching, the sheer volume of relevant journalist queries in the fitness and recovery space made reactive the more efficient engine here.

One story was the deliberate exception. We pitched the “T-Rex” sleep posture angle proactively, a clinical observation about nerve irritation, framed for a general audience. It was the campaign's clearest demonstration of what a genuinely novel, expert-led angle does that reactive commentary cannot: it was picked up across multiple titles from a single pitch, rather than earning one placement per query.

The outcome

Branded search went from zero to roughly 200 searches a month, with no paid spend behind it. People who had encountered the brand as a cited expert in national press were going away and searching for it by name. That is the cleanest signal earned media produces: coverage converting into demand you did not buy.

Referring traffic rose alongside it. But the change that mattered commercially was in the type of enquiry arriving:

  • Distributorship approaches. Other brands began contacting them to ask whether they would stock and distribute their products, inbound partnership interest the business had never had to chase.
  • Requests for products they didn't normally carry. Buyers arriving from articles started asking for items outside the usual range, surfacing real demand, and hidden market opportunities, the business hadn't known were there.

Those requests did more than generate orders. Acting on them let the retailer broaden its catalogue, cater to more customers and move into gaps it hadn't seen, turning press-driven curiosity into a wider, more useful product range and a better customer experience.

The volume also changed what the website needed to do. Enquiries were landing as free-text emails at a business now fielding wholesale terms, partnership offers and specific product requests. We suggested building that demand into the site itself, a short product-request form and a separate distributorship & partnership form, so a prospective distributor or a buyer after a particular product could raise it in one step, instead of hunting for an email address or waiting on chat. The PR programme changed the website's job.

What it shows

Reactive PR is often treated as the lesser discipline, answering other people's questions rather than setting the agenda. Done at volume, with a genuine practitioner behind the answers, it compounds: sixteen placements, thirteen of them verified at DR 74–91, and a brand that went from unsearched to sought by name.

The single proactive story shows why you still need both. One original angle, correctly framed, travelled further than any individual reactive placement did.
